Three Floors Up, Out a Window, and Gone in Twelve Days
A large-scale secure records purge at a historic New England mill complex
The Challenge
A national energy and logistics company needed decades of stored business records removed and securely destroyed from a historic mill complex in northeastern Connecticut. The material sat in two very different places, and each one presented its own problem.
The first was a ground-level warehouse dock holding roughly 120 pallets of records. Straightforward work, but the customer needed it cleared fast and without disrupting weekday operations at the property.
The second was the hard one. Thousands of boxes were shelved on the third floor of a nineteenth-century mill tower — a building with narrow stairwells, limited elevator capacity, and no practical way to move that volume of paper down through the interior without weeks of hand-carrying. Conventional approaches would have taken months. The customer had a hard deadline measured in weeks.
The Solution: Bring the Building to the Truck
Rather than move paper down through the building, Infoshred moved it out of the building. Our team engineered an exterior chute system anchored at a third-floor window, running from a purpose-built mounting frame down to bulk containers staged at ground level.
The window mount was fabricated specifically for this structure. Crews built a bracket assembly sized to the opening, rigged with protective sheathing so no part of the historic facade or window frame carried load or took damage. A welded top hopper fed the chute sections, giving crews upstairs a controlled drop point and keeping material contained through the full descent.
Upstairs, teams worked the shelving row by row, feeding boxes into the hopper. Downstairs, a second crew rotated bulk containers under the chute outlet, staged filled units, and loaded trailers. Seventy-five containers moved in a continuous three-set rotation — one filling, one in transit, one returning — so the crews upstairs never waited on empties.
Eleven Trucks, One Saturday
The dock phase called for a different kind of solution: speed, and no interference with the property's weekday operations. Infoshred put a fourteen-person crew on site on a single Saturday and cleared the entire dock area in one day.
120 pallets staged, loaded, and hauled. Eleven truckloads. Over 50 tons of records off the property and en route to secure destruction — between one sunrise and one sunset.
Loaded trucks cycled continuously between the mill and our East Windsor destruction facility roughly sixty-four miles away, each one documented and weighed. By Monday morning the dock was empty and broom-clean, and the property's weekday operations had never been touched.
Managed, Not Improvised
Projects of this size fail on coordination, not on effort. Infoshred ran this engagement as a managed project from the first site walk to the final Certificate of Destruction.
The Result
The project finished on Friday, August 21 — ten days ahead of the contractual deadline. One hundred eighty-six tons of records were removed, transported, and securely destroyed at our NAID AAA Certified facility. Ninety-nine percent of the material was recovered for recycling and baled for reuse at Northeast paper
mills. Both work areas were left broom-clean, and Certificates of Destruction were issued for every pound processed.
No damage to a historic structure. No disruption to the property's operations. No missed deadline.
